SUNNYVALE, CA — Ford has partered with Telenav to offer a new in-vehicle and smartphone app called Scout, which is a navigation application that provides personalized routing information, such as when to leave, how to get there, and what to do when you arrive. Users can download the app via Ford’s SYNC AppLink service for use in SYNC-equipped vehicles and for their smartphone via Apple’s iTunes store and Android’s Google Play app store.
The Scout app integrates with SYNC AppLink and gives drivers and passengers hands-free, voice-activated access to navigation information, such as gas prices, local search functionality, and directions, for example. SYNC AppLink is available on the 2013-MY Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, F-150, Super Duty, E-Series vans, and Expedition.
The Scout app comes in two versions, free and a premium, for Android devices. It costs $24.99 annually ($4.99 monthly). The premium version offers Car Connect, a feature that allows the app to work with AppLink, and adds traffic incident information with automatic re-routing, traffic camera information, lane assist, and speed limit alerts.
AppLink is a standard feature in Ford’s SYNC system. It allows vehicle owners to access and control Ford-approved smartphone apps that offer voice commands and vehicle controls.
Scout for Android is currently available for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint customers through the Google Play store, according to Ford. Ford stated that Telenav also plans to launch the app soon for T-Mobile customers.
