FORT PIERCE, Fla. --- St. Lucie County School District officials are considering the option of running the district's 400-bus fleet on biodiesel. The district's transportation coordinator, Don Carter, said he has already found a potential biodiesel supplier. "What we are looking at now, and where we want to be, is totally into biodiesel," Karen Williams, the district's transportation director, told Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. "It will help with emissions and hopefully we are looking at a lower cost." The fuel would most likely be a mix of diesel and soy oil, officials said. The district's buses cumulatively average 8 million miles annually. Earlier this month, the Florida House passed a bill that would provide more than $60 million for biofuels research. The legislation also seeks to establish voluntary programs for districts to adopt clean-energy policies.
