SEATTLE – Apr. 29, 2006, marked a single-day record for nationwide usage of Flexcar’s car-sharing service. According to Green Car Congress, this surpassed a previous single-day usage mark set only two weeks before. Increasing gas prices are spurring new interest car-sharing, and a sharp increase in new memberships for Flexcar. Local usage records have also been set in recent days in Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Portland; and San Francisco. Members reserve vehicles — including gas-electric hybrids; pickup trucks; AWDs; and minivans — via the Internet or touchtone phone for use by the hour. An hourly fee includes gas, insurance, unlimited miles, maintenance, parking, and 24-7 emergency service.
