Fla. Warns of Traffic Ticket Scam
A company is misrepresenting itself as a state entity and demanding payment for fake traffic tickets, according to Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is warning motorists about a scam in which a company identifies itself as the DHSMV and demands payment for fraudulent traffic citations.
“The company, which is not associated with the DHSMV in any way, will send emails to consumers requesting payment of a citation within a certain timeframe and if the payment is not received on time, the company will falsely require a daily late fee payment,” the department said in a released statement.
The emails include a linked payment page and email address. Though the linked payment page appears to be inactive at this time, the DHSMV is warning consumers that this is a scam and no payment should be made. Additionally, people who have already made a payment should “refute the charge and take the appropriate security measures with their financial institution,” the department said.
DHSMV stressed that the department and court clerks don’t email citations or require citation payment via email. Also, citation numbers are always seven alphanumeric digits.
“If a consumer receives a notice regarding a suspicious citation, they should contact the local Clerk of Court or call the DHSMV immediately,” the department advised.
