FCA US plans to convert the majority of its lineup to gasoline-electric hybrids by 2025, CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters ahead of the release of the company's 2016 Town & Country minivan, which will include a plug-in hybrid model.
Marchionne said "most of the fleet" of FCA US would be offered as hybrids between 2020 and 2025, reports the Detroit News. FCA will introduce its new Town & Country in early 2016.
FCA has initially hoped diesel vehicles would help it achieve the upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Even with the ongoing Volkswagen AG scandal involving up to 11 million cars worldwide having deceiving software to cheat federal regulations, Marchionne does not believe “that diesel is dead.”
"The origin of this problem was a corporate governance failure," he said. "It was not the failure of technology."
