Brian Baumeister of Bowmansville, NY, was named Delivery Man of the Year Monday. Lona Corbin of Oxford, AL, and Tami Massaro of Littlerock, Calif., tied for the title of Delivery Woman of the Year at the first Workhorse Race to Deliver.
All three won seven-day Caribbean cruises for two. In addition, Baumeister, who was overall point winner, was awarded a two-year lease on a GMC Jimmy SUV.
Baumeister said the competition Monday, on the streets of Manhattan, was “insane.” But Baumeister also had to score well in Sunday’s skills competition near the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
Twelve delivery drivers from the U.S. and Canada gathered in New York Sept. 10 and 11 to compete in Race to Deliver, a competition created to highlight the importance of delivery drivers and the vehicles they use in today’s economy.
Drivers were faced with the challenge of making their pickups and deliveries on the streets of Manhattan during a Monday morning rush hour. It was normal traffic: bumper to bumper with taxi cabs darting in and out. The drivers quickly learned how to maneuver in the traffic, while remembering that delivery vehicles have an unspoken right to double park.
One of the more unusual deliveries was a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts to the police station in Times Square. The officers were not alerted about the deliveries until shortly before the event. They joined in the fun and were very gracious, as well as happy to get the doughnuts.
