Cummins Recalling 25K Natural Gas Engines for Fire Risk

Cummins Inc. and the engine maker’s joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc., are recalling 25,013 natural gas engines because a sensor might fail in extremely cold weather and pose a fire risk.

Cummins Inc. and the engine maker’s joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc., are recalling 25,013 natural gas engines because a sensor might fail in extremely cold weather and pose a fire risk.

The recall affects Cummins Westport ISL G engines manufactured from Sept. 12, 2007 through Feb. 2, 2014 and ISX12 G engines manufactured from Feb. 19, 2013 through Feb. 2, 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

Dealers will remedy the problem with a new engine control module (ECM) calibration. There will be no charge for this service.

Cummins Westport has received two reports of exhaust pipe fires linked to the problem.

The fire risk arises when condensation, present in the tubes that distribute air coming into the engine, freezes in frigid weather. The resulting ice can hinder temperature and pressure sensor operation and increase exhaust temperatures.

The recall number for ISL G engines is C1462. The recall number for ISX12 G engines is C1461.
