City Fleet Converts Gas Truck to Electric
In a do-it-yourself experiment, the City of Tallahassee converted a Ford Ranger to electric power only. Five more conversions are planned.
The Tallahassee, Fla. Fleet Management Department recently introduced an all-electric Ford pickup truck to its fleet, according to Tallahassee.com. Even more impressive, the all-electric vehicle was a part of a do-it-yourself experiment to improve the truck, which had a bad transmission and rising maintenance expenses.
The all-electric addition joins the city's 16 hybrid vehicles, five o which run on compressed natural gas, and four that are all-electric.
According to the news source, the truck conversion took three months. The V-6 engine with automatic transmission was replaced with an electric motor, controller, 24 batteries and a 5-speed transmission. The truck can be driven up to 60 miles between charges and can be recharged anywhere there is a 120-volt outlet.
The conversion cost between $10,000 and $12,000, according to the Web site. Additionally, the city of Tallahassee plans to convert five other vehicles to be all-electric.
