Chicago Suburb Opts for Hybrids Instead of Used Police Cars
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. --- In a move to save gasoline and to promote fuel efficiency to its citizens, the Chicago suburb of Highland Park spent nearly $450,000 on 21 hybrid sedan hatchbacks.
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. --- In a move to save gasoline and to promote fuel efficiency to its citizens, the Chicago suburb of Highland Park spent nearly $450,000 on 21 hybrid sedan hatchbacks. In the past, the city recycled its police cars back into the fleet used by city staffers like building inspectors. But Highland Park leaders decided that was setting a bad example because those vehicles are gas-guzzlers, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune. Mayor Michael Belsky also points out the value of the municipal government leading by example. Each of the city's Toyota Priuses has "Electric Hybrid" emblazoned on the side. The city estimates it saved almost $10,000 on gasoline in the first six months the hybrids were on the road. Highland Park plans to buy more hybrids, the newspaper story said.
