CALSTART Member Companies Secure Nearly $200 Million for Projects in Advanced Clean Transportation Technologies

PASADENA, CA - CALSTART, the nation's leading clean transportation technologies consortium, applauded five member organizations for successfully securing $192.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding aimed at accelerating the clean transportation market.

PASADENA, CA - CALSTART, the nation's leading clean transportation technologies consortium, applauded five member organizations for successfully securing $192.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding aimed at accelerating the clean transportation market.

The companies awarded were:

  • Allison Transmission, Inc. of Indianapolis, which will use the funding to work on hybrid trucks.

  • Navistar, Inc of Elkhart, Ind., which will work on battery electric trucks.

  • UQM Technologies, Inc of Frederick, Colo., which will work on electric vehicle propulsion systems.

  • South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCQAMD) of California, which will deploy demonstration fleets and develop a plug-in hybrid electric system for classes 2-5 vehicles. Another CALSTART member, Eaton Corp, of Cleveland will develop the plug-in hybrid drive system for the SCAQMD project.

"These CALSTART member organizations have technologies ready to commercialize and to transform the next generation of the world's cars and trucks," said John Boesel, CALSTART President and CEO. "The administration has shined a bright spotlight on the issue with these timely transportation investments - it's a great down payment on what's needed!  We hope this represents the start of a long-term commitment to policies, incentives and investments that support developing, building and using cleaner, more efficient vehicles."

Increasing U.S. capacity to manufacture hybrid systems for the commercial truck market.

Navistar, Inc. (Truck)

Manufacturing: Elkhart County, Ind.; Deployment: Portland, Ore., Chicago, and Sacramento, Calif.

Develop, validate, and deploy 400 advanced battery electric delivery trucks (12,100 lbs. gross vehicle weight) with a 100 mile range.

South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)

$45.4M

Headquarters: Diamond Bar, Calif.; Manufacturing: Galesburg, Mich. and Elizabethtown, Ky.; Deployment: 50 different utilities and fleets

Develop a fully integrated, production plug-in hybrid system for Class 2 - 5 vehicles (8,501 - 19,500 lbs gross vehicle weight). Demonstrate a fleet of 378 trucks and shuttle buses.
