BMW's X1 compact utility will enter its second generation with the 2016 model year with a model that increases interior roominess, operational efficiency, and technology options, BMW has announced.
BMW will offer the vehicle, which debuted with the 2010 model year, as an X1 xDrive28i. The all-wheel-drive model will be powered by a 2.0-liter TwinTurbo inline-four cylinder paired with a new 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
The 2016 X1 adds interior room and cargo space, as well as new options such as full-LED adaptive headlights, a head-up display and the safety package Driver Assistance Plus, which includes lane departure warning, speed limit info, automatic high beams, frontal collision warning with pedestrian warning and "city collision mitigation."
Power front seats are now standard and provide a seating position raised by more than one inch in front and more than 2.5 inches in the rear compared to the outgoing model. Leg room in the rear has increased by 1.5 inches in standard specification and by up to 2.6 inches. Rear cargo space has been increased 15 percent based on European measurement standards.
BMW has optimized the engine with the latest incarnation of its TwinPower Turbo with TwinScroll turbocharger and an updated generation of Valvetronic. The new transmission is expected to increase fuel economy over the 2015 model.
The 2016 X1 will arrive in showrooms in the fall. Pricing has not been announced.
