BMW has unveiled the concept for the i4, its latest electric car. The BMW Concept i4 is planned to enter production in 2021 as the company’s first all-electric sedan in the premium midsize class.

The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of the BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean, and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.”

The i4’s front end presents BMW icons in a new look with an updated version of BMW’s kidney grille design. With no combustion engine, the grille now serves as an intelligence panel holding various sensors, according to the company. The interior features BMW’s large Curved Display screen, which teams up with the steering wheel to offer a new take on driver orientation.

“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character, and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” said Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design. “With the BMW Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way.”

The i4 will feature BMW’s fifth generation eDrive technology. The new electric motor will generate a maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, according to the company. The newly designed high-voltage battery has an energy content of approximately 80 kWh and achieves an estimated EPA range of 270 miles/WLTP range of 600 km.

The production of the new i4 is planned to begin in 2021 at BMW Group’s plant in Munich.
