BMW and Motorola showed off the BMW digital CPT 8000 phone system. It features a Motorola TimeportTM digital telematics phone which operates on most digital cellular networks across the country. The phone can be used in or out of the car, and snaps into a cradle built into the console armrest. Software developed for the phone interfaces with in-vehicle electronics so that the driver can initiate and end calls by touching the call-control button on the steering wheel. Voice activation is offered as an accessory. Advanced signal processors eliminate background noise and echo, and caller ID information is displayed on the instrument panel. All BMW vehicles except the Z3 sports roadster are factory wired for the system, and as of January 15, 2001, it was offered as standard on 7 Series sedans.
