Audi has begun developing a new high-resolution mapping system for its driver assistance systems that would improve fuel economy and convenience for drivers, the automaker has announced.
Audi has begun to implement more sophisticated vehicle awareness technology in its 2016 Q7 luxury SUV. The Q7's "predictive efficiency assistant" utilizes information about topography to get the car to its destination with greater efficiency and convenience.
The predictive efficiency assistant recognizes curves, roundabouts, intersections, descents and ascents, as well as municipality border and speed limit signs, often before the driver sees them. Drivers who fully utilize this feature can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 percent.
Audi is working with strategic partners such as TomTom to develop the "navigation map of the future," according to the automaker. The next generation Audi A8 will be a front-runner in piloted driving technology and the use of high-resolution maps.
