AT&T’s 5G network has gone live in 10 U.S. cities, including Birmingham, Ala; Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Providence, R.I.; Rochester, N.Y.; San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose, according to a report by Smart Cities Dive.

The 5G network is in the low-speed spectrum; it has slower speeds than the millimeter wave spectrum but has a broader range, which means it requires less infrastructure to transmit, according to the report.

All four of the major telecom companies (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon) have announced a nationwide 5G rollout next year. City leaders will face issues as they look to adopt the new technology, including if it will affect the environment and weaken climate goals, says the report.

AT&T plans to launch its 5G network soon in Boston, Bridgeport, Conn; Buffalo, N.Y.; Las Vegas, Louisville, Ky.; and New York City. Additionally, the company has promised to have nationwide coverage in the first half of 2020.
