SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) has responded to a news item reported in the April 24 edition of AF eNews that cited a report claiming that ethanol fuel may harm the environment. The report was by Mark Z. Jacobson of Stanford University, and published in the online edition of the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

“Air quality has improved in every city, county, and state that has switched from straight gasoline use to ethanol blended fuel. Those are real-world results, not predictions,” ACE said in a statement.

In order to provide a real-world perspective on ethanol use and the environment, ACE has made available a report titled “Clearing the Air with Ethanol: A Review of the Real World Impact from Fuels Blended with Ethanol.” Published in March 2006 by Better Environmental Solutions and the Renewable Energy Action Project, this analysis shows that ethanol use reduces carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions by at least one-third.
