2016 BMW 7 Series Gets Lighter, Adds PHEV

BMW's 7 Series luxury sedan arrives for 2016 as a lighter-weight flagship model with higher-tech features that offers a choice of two gasoline engines and a plug-in hybrid model.

BMW has revamped the 7 Series powertrain offerings for 2016 to include the 750i xDrive with a 4.4-liter V-8, 740i with a 3.0-liter inline-six, and 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid that pairs a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder.

The 740e xDrive, which will arrive in 2016, offers a 23-mile range on in electric mode.

BMW has achieved a 190-pound weight reduction on the 2016 model by using extensive carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and ultra-high-tensile steel for the vehicle's structural core, as well as aluminum doors and trunk lid.

The new model offers a bevy of technology features, including perpendicular and parallel parking assist, night vision with 3D surround view, a removeable touch-command 7-inch tablet to control various functions, and iDrive 5.0 with a touch display and gesture control that uses "pre-selected hand movements."

BMW is offering the new 7 Series only in a long wheelbase model that measures 206.6 inches in length. The 750i xDrive arrives with a curb weight of 4,610 pounds, while the 740i curb weight is 4,225 pounds.
