Fiat Chrysler Automobiles held a media presentation on May 30 demonstrating the capabilities of its 2020 Jeep Gladiator 4x4 midsize pickup at Calamigos Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu, Calif.
Built in Toledo, Ohio, the Jeep Gladiator is available in four trim configurations: Sport, Sport S, Overland, and Rubicon. It is capable of towing up to 7,650 pounds and has a 1,600-pound payload capacity. The Gladiator's crew cab configuration features a five-foot steel bed with integrated tie-downs that provide versatility for flexible cargo options. The steel bed utilizes four steel cross-members to reinforce the load floor. It is built with a lightweight, high-strength aluminum tailgate, doors, hood, fenders, and windshield frame to reduce curb weight and increase fuel economy.
For fleet applications, utility and versatility are maximized with under-rail bed lighting and an optional covered external power source. An available spray-in bed liner, bed divider and tonneau cover keep cargo secure while helping to enhance pickup bed durability.
The Gladiator's body-on-frame design features an all-new lightweight, high-strength steel frame. When compared to Jeep Wrangler four-door, Gladiator’s frame is an additional 31 inches longer while the wheelbase is 19.4 inches longer. The longer wheelbase and the bed's positioning center aft of the rear axle centerline enables for better weight distribution and better ride when carrying cargo.
A full-size spare tire and mount is located under the bed, behind the rear axle and capable of holding up to a 35-inch tire.
Powertrain & Safety Options
The Jeep Gladiator is powered by the 3.6L Pentastar V-6 engine. In 2020, a 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 engine will be offered.
The 3.6L Pentastar V-6 engine delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and features engine stop-start (ESS) as standard equipment. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all Gladiator models equipped with the 3.6L Pentastar V-6, and an eight-speed automatic transmission is optional.
The 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque, and is available with standard ESS. An eight-speed automatic transmission will be standard EcoDiesel.
In terms of safety equipment, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator offers more than 80 available active and passive safety and security features. Available features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, forward-facing off-road camera, standard ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, adaptive cruise control, and electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation.
