Fleets searching for a compact SUV for upper-echelon sales reps may want to consider the 2018 GMC Terrain — a capable utility that arrives in a more upscale package that its companion Chevrolet Equinox.

GM is building both vehicles on a new platform, and has provided meaningful upgrades to the second-generation GMC Terrain that include a new engine trio with a diesel option and a nine-speed transmission that helps improve fuel economy.

The move expands choice in the Terrain lineup, which previously offered a 2.4-liter non-turbo four-cylinder engine or 3.6-liter V-6. The new lineup adds turbocharging to a four-cylinder trio with displacements of 1.6-liter for diesel or 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter for gasoline.

We tested the Terrain SLT equipped with the base 1.5-liter engine that delivers power to a front-wheel drivetrain. The engine makes 170 horsepower and 204 pound-feet of torque. In that configuration, the vehicle reaches an EPA-rated 30 mpg in highway driving and 26 mpg in the city.

This Terrain adds a very comfortable ride to the package, as engineers have slayed noise, vibration and harshness. Steering is nicely responsive.

As with its Equinox companion, the new Terrain brings a slew of new technology, including available safety alerts and an optional 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Other new available safety features include a surround vision camera system and vibrating Safety Alert Seat. A 7-inch color touch screen for the infotainment system has been nicely integrated into the dash. The upgrade is an 8-inch screen. All models get Apply CarPlay and Android Auto.

The 2018 Terrain can seat five adults relatively comfortably with ample head room. The rear cargo area offers 29.6 cubic feet of area, and can expand to 63.3 cubic feet when the second row is folded flat. Don't miss the hidden cargo compartment under the rear floor if you need additional space.

It's available in four trims, including SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.
