DETROIT - smart USA said it plans to launch a five-door vehicle on the U.S. market by the end of 2011. The B-segment five-door car is to be sold solely in the United States and is based on vehicle architecture from Nissan, according to an Oct. 6 statement from the manufacturer.

Sales and service of the five-seater will be carried out exclusively by the approximately 75 smart dealerships in the U.S.

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by smart USA and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., smart USA would obtain the rights to procure and distribute a five-door, gasoline powered, B-segment vehicle from Nissan for sale through the smart USA retail dealership network in the United States.

The new vehicle is expected to be available for retail sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to smart USA.

Further details of the product and its distribution will be announced by the companies at a later date.
