With more than 50 million vehicles with unrepaired safety recalls on the road in the United States, fleet operators need to be vigilant about keeping pace with recalls. Many of these involve defective parts that can pose serious risks to fleet drivers.
Recently, Stellantis issued three separate recalls for different problems across various vehicles.
The automaker is recalling approximately 12,458 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 2.0L PHEV engines because the engine may shut down due to a loss of communication between the transmission control module and the hybrid control processor. This is a serious problem as an unexpected loss of driving power increases the likelihood of a crash.
To fix the problem, dealers will update the vehicle control software, free of charge. Stellantis’ reference number for this recall is 65A.
In a second action, Stellantis is recalling an estimated 331,401 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. The rear coil springs may have been incorrectly installed and detach from the vehicle while driving. This scenario increases the risk of a collision.
To remedy the matter, dealers will inspect and if necessary, repair the rear coil spring assemblies, at no cost to owners. The manufacturer’s reference number for this recall is 64A.
In a third action, Stellantis is recalling approximately 80,629 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines due to a crankshaft issue. Specifically, the crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and camshaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall. This situation is hazardous as an engine stall increases the chances of a crash.
To fix the problem, dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Stellantis’ reference number for this recall is 66A. This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-475.
In the case of all three recalls, owner notification letters will be mailed July 28. Owners may contact Stellantis customer service at (800) 853-1403.
