Nissan North America is expanding a previously announced 2016 model-year Maxima recall, adding to the campaign 41,388 2013-2016 Altima 3.5 sedans equipped with V6 engines.

The safety recall, which addresses a fuel leak risk, now covers 46,846 vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The fire risk problem stems from an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly during assembly. In the event of a collision, fuel may leak where the fuel-sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

To remedy the problem, Nissan dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel-sending unit. The recall is already under way.

Vehicle owners can reach Nissan at (800) 647-7261.
