How Forward Collision Avoidance Technology Works
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) created a number of videos featuring animations that show how advanced types of collision avoidance technologies work. In this video, IIHS' animation demonstrates forward collision avoidance, where a system in the vehicle alerts the driver if the vehicle is getting to close to another ahead of it. These systems use different kinds of sensors (radar and LIDAR, for example) and cameras to detect a vehicle up ahead, according to IIHS. Pedestrian detection is a related technology.
