How Forward Collision Avoidance Technology Works
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) created a number of videos featuring animations that show how advanced types of collision avoidance technologies work.

Front crash prevention systems notify drivers when their vehicle is approaching too closely to another. Many systems precharge the brakes to enhance their effectiveness if the driver reacts to the alert, while some systems can automatically brake if the driver does not respond.
These systems rely on sensors such as cameras, radar, or LIDAR to detect vehicles ahead. Although forward collision warning systems with autonomous braking may not always prevent a crash, they can help reduce the vehicle's speed, lessening the impact of the collision.
