Ford Motor Co. said it’s expanding its recall for vehicles containing faulty Takata passenger frontal air bag inflators, adding 654,695 more Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles in the U.S.

“This action represents primarily a planned expansion of previously recalled vehicles to new geographic regions,” Ford said in a released statement.

Ford is recalling an additional 161,174 vehicles in Canada for the same issue.

Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator at no cost to the customer. The Ford reference number for this recall is 17S01.

Fleet managers can learn whether any of their fleet vehicles are included in this recall by visiting and clicking on “safety recalls” at the bottom of the page. (You’ll need all the applicable vehicle identification numbers handy.)

The vehicles involved include:

  • 2005-2009 and 2012 Ford Mustang
  • 2005-2006 Ford GT
  • 2006-2009 and 2012 Ford Fusion
  • 2007-2009 Ford Ranger
  • 2007-2009 Ford Edge
  • 2006-2009 and 2012 Lincoln Zephyr and Lincoln MKZ
  • 2007-2009 Lincoln MKX
  • 2006-2009 Mercury Milan.

Ford noted it isn’t aware of any injuries associated with the passenger-side frontal inflators included in this safety recall.

Defective Takata air bags, installed in vehicles made by 19 different automakers, have been linked to 11 deaths and approximately 180 injuries in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The faulty air bag inflators use an ammonium nitrate-based propellant without a chemical drying agent.

Went to the Dealer for my 2014 Mustang, yep its on the list to be replaced. They told me that the 2014's are not ready to be replaced yet. By the time it gets replaced it will be old and forgotten. Sigh
