Fleet Safety Video Tip: Navigating a Median U-Turn Intersection

VIDEO: Understanding Median U-Turn Intersections

To promote greater safety and combat traffic congestion, more state transportation officials are considering the addition of median U-turn intersections. This traffic management concept, most commonly seen in the state of Michigan, provides drivers with an alternative to the traditional left turn at a signal-controlled intersection.

Unfortunately, this roadway design is also unfamiliar to many drivers and can cause confusion. As a result, some drivers might unwittingly violate a no-left-turn ordinance at a main intersection.

Here’s a video that details the benefits of median U-turn intersections and explains how drivers can safely navigate these designs. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration produced the video.

You may want to pass this video along to your fleet drivers so they can readily identify this roadway design and are never caught off-guard.
