WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor North America is recalling 427 2011 model-year RAV4 vehicles manufactured from Nov. 24 through Dec. 19 of 2011. In the curtain shield airbags, propellant with the wrong specification was used for the initiator assembled in the airbag inflator.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this condition could result in inflator malfunction, which in turn could lead to curtain shield airbag failure during a collision.

Toyota will notify owners of the recall, and dealers will check VINs to identify the curtain shield assemblies in question so they can be replaced with new ones free of charge. The recall is set to begin in early March.

Vehicle owners can reach Toyota at (800) 331-4331.
