WASHINGTON - American Honda Motor Co. is recalling about 97,200 model-year 2009-2010 Fit vehicles because their potential for stalling creates a safety risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

One or more of the four spring assemblies on the engine's variable valve timing and lift electronic control (VTEC) system may fail, increasing the risk of the vehicle stalling during operation. To remedy the problem, dealers will perform an inspection and replace the spring assemblies in the engine if necessary. There will be no charge for the service.

Vehicle owners can reach Honda at (800) 999-1009.
