Long Island's Southern State Parkway, Hempstead Turnpike Have High Accident Rates

August 23, 2007

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. --- The New York State Department of Transportation has released data revealing that Southern State Parkway is the most dangerous state road on Long Island, and Hempstead Turnpike has the most accident-prone locations.According to Newsday, Southern State Parkway is where five of Long Island's 10 worst-rated spots are located, compared with similar state roads throughout the state. Hempstead Turnpike has 12 segments with higher than average accident rates west of the Meadowbrook Parkway. In 2004 and 2005, there were nearly 24,000 accidents on Long Island's 724 miles of state roads. Data for 2006 isn't yet available. The Department of Transportation's data analysis suggests that the 363 places where accident frequency is higher than average might have road flaws or other problems that may be a contributing factor.Newsday waged a three-year legal battle in order to get the data released publicly. The data also shows that a three-tenths of a mile stretch of Route 110 just north of the Southern State and south of Main Street in Farmingdale was the most dangerous location on all of Long Island's state routes. Two fatal accidents and 68 accidents with injuries occured there during 2004 and 2005. The department concluded that extreme congestion at the confluence of three heavily traveled roads is the problem.
