A new passive restraint belt system consisting of a combined automatic shoulder belt and manual lap belt will be installed on a limited number of production Toyota Corona vehicles more than three years

ahead of the government-ordered time table. Under a federal regulation, known as Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, it is mandated that passive restraint systems be phased in on cars sold in the U.S. beginning with selected 1982 models. Corona-sized cars are not required to be so equipped until the 1984 model year. The Toyota combined system is designed to provide a full restraint system for front seat passengers. When the door is opened, the shoulder belt moves forward and off the occupant, allowing easy exit and entry. When the door is closed, the belt returns to the occupant-protective position automatically. The new system will be available on certain Corona models in select areas next spring.
