Island of Maui Sees Highest Prices at Pump

March 17, 2008

WAILUKU, Hawaii --- The island of Maui is about to become the first area in the U.S. to average $4 for a gallon of regular gasoline, the Los Angeles Times reported.

On Friday, March 14, the average price in Wailuku reached $3.943 --- the highest in AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge report.

Most nationwide gasoline price surveys exclude Hawaii, giving the impression that California's Bay Area has the highest prices at the pump. But residents of Maui know otherwise.

At several stations on Friday, regular gasoline was just a cent shy of $4. In the coastal town of Hana, the price was about $4.40 a gallon.

The price hike is making life in paradise considerably more difficult for many of its residents. "It has a big effect because our housing is high, our food is high and the gas prices just make it worse," Wailuku resident Janet Carone told the L.A. Times.
