ILLINOIS TOLLWAY ATTACKS POLLUTION

The Illinois Tollway is studying available anti-pollution devices and their costs with the possibility of installing them on its vehicles. The Authority also has reached an agreement with Standard Oil, which has gasoline stations throughout the 187-mile tollway system, to carry and sell the new third grade of unleaded gasoline.

 

NAFA LAW GROUP TO MEET IN LA

The Law Enforcement Group of the National Association of Fleet Administrators, Inc., will hold a special three day seminar/workshop on Police and Highway Patrol Vehicle Specifications and Equipment in Los Angeles, July 27 through 29. The program will include presentations by automobile, tire and equipment manufacturers and intensive discussions of vehicles, tire and communication equipment requirements. Meetings will be at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, Universal City, Calif.

 

A PLAYMATE-NOT A HOOD ORNAMENT

Definitely not standard equipment is pretty Claudia Jennings of Los Angeles, aspiring actress and Playboy Magazine's "Playmate of the Year." According to Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division, Claudia's car is a Capri, so they promptly claimed the title "Playmate Car of the Year" for their import.

 

VW'S ALWAYS GET THEIR MAN HERE

The Volkswagen of America News Bureau quotes New York Daily News Columnist Bob Sylvester telling of the entire VW police fleet on the five mile wide and 12 mile long Caribbean Island of St. Martin and the question asked of the police chief: "Are these little cars fast enough to catch criminals?" The chief's reply: "Where are they going to go?"

 

NCRS INAUGURATES "FUNWHEELS"

Deluxe Campers, Motor Homes and Travel Trailers (pictured left to right) will be part of a National Car Rental test program in the rental of recreational/camping vehicles this year. Major test areas are Boston, Seattle, Sacramento and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Similar programs are being tested in the smaller communities of Rochester, Duluth, St. Cloud and Virginia-all in Minnesota. Called "Funwheels," the program is expected to determine the feasibility of standardization in the recreation rental market. NCRS also announced the opening of a new car center and a new truck center in Houston, Tex., and a new automobile service center in Detroit, Mich.

 

AMER. EXPRESS OPENS "SPACE BANK"

A local phone call to a single number will enable travelers anywhere in the United States to reserve hotel or motel rooms and rental cars, anywhere in the world, for up to a year in advance through American Express Reservation Services' "Space Bank." Through the new computerized system based in Memphis, Tenn., confirmed reservations are available in seconds.

 

ROLLINS-SPINA MERGER SET

Rollins teasing Corporation, a full service vehicle leasing firm belonging to Rollins-International, Inc., Wilmington, Del., has agreed in principle to acquire Spina Truck teasing, Inc., Reading, Pa., and its wholly owned subsidiary, Safe-Way Truck teasing, Inc., Toledo, O. The acquisition would add five facilities to Rollins' nationwide network and nearly 1,000 vehicles to the northeastern division which was formerly a part of Rollins-Coile, Inc. J. Olin Coile, president of Rollins teasing Corporation, announced that Ben Spina, president of Spina Truck teasing, will become vice president of the entire northeastern division.

 

FLY/DRIVE/CAMP PROGRAM BY AVIS

Avis Rent A Car System has introduced a vacation package in connection with American Airlines and Kampgrounds of America. Called "American Camping Adventures," selected itineraries are suggested for vacationers, or they may select their own, and budget prices are available for flights to the area, car rental for sight seeing and convenience, and for lodgings and recreation. A typical budget package can make a two-week vacation for a family of five available for five dollars per day per person for accommodations and car rental. Air travel is extra, but also at reduced costs.

 

AVIS SHIP-TO-SHORE SERVICE IN FLORIDA

Avis Rent A Car System, Inc., has opened a new ship-to-shore car rental office at Port Everglades, Fla. Furnished with the car models used by the company in the Miami area, the office is located at the terminal building. The new service for all ship arrivals enables Avis customers to have their cars waiting for them at dockside. Customers may rent their Avis car through the ship's purser at no additional cost. A cost saving "Safari Plan" is also available.

 

ROLLINS FORMS CENTRAL CO.

Robert H. Shertz, executive vice president of Rollins has announced that the leasing subsidiaries of Rollins International, Inc. have been unified into a central company to be known as the Rollins Leasing Corp. President of the consolidated company will be J. Olin Coile.

 

NATIONAL/DRESSER MERGE

It has been announced by Dresser Industries, Inc. and National Equipment Leasing Corporation that they have entered into an agreement providing for the merger of National into a wholly owned subsidiary of Dresser in exchange for 90,000 shares of Dresser common stock. Subject to the receipt from the Internal Revenue Service of a favorable tax ruling, the merger was expected to be consumated about June 1, 1970. Ronald L. Boothman, presently the chief executive and owner of National, will be president of the subsidiary after the merger.

KEEP TORQUE CONVERTER COOL

BUILT-IN CORROSION RESISTANCE

High resistance to corrosives is being built into the 1971 Chevrolet Van and Sportvan through body design and manufacturing techniques. After the body is assembled, a six-step anti-corrosion program is followed, which includes a thorough body cleaning in which the body is processed through a seven-stage zinc phosphate washer. Later the body is submerged in a negatively-charged water-paint emulsion, causing the paint to flow to the body which carries a positive charge. Paint thickness is accurately regulated by the voltage applied.
