Most fleet managers (77 percent) reported receiving a pay increase in 2014, up from 67 percent in 2012. Of those who received an increase, 70 percent reported an increase of up to 3 percent.

Fleet managers reported an increase for each jump in total vehicles managed, with those managing under 50 vehicles reporting the lowest median salary.

24 percent of fleet managers reported earning a business degree, tied with 24 percent of fleet managers who noted that they have some college experience. Only 2 percent of fleet managers reported holding a post-graduate degree.

Fleet managers who report to the purchasing department reported the highest median salary of $97,500 per year, and 13 percent of respondents noted they reported to purchasing in 2014.

The majority of fleet manager respondents (84 percent) reported that, in addition to fleet management, they also develop fleet policies and procedures, down from 89 percent in 2012. Additionally, the number of fleet managers who authorize preventive maintenance dropped from 86 percent in 2012 to 74 percent in 2014.    

The largest number of fleet manager respondents (52 percent) reported between 76 and 100 percent of their time was spent on fleet management, up from 44 percent in 2012. 

47 percent of fleet managers only manage fleet, while 23 percent reported additional duties.

For the first time, fleet manager respondents were asked to rate how happy they were with their job. The majority of fleet managers (71 percent) reported that they are happy or very happy with their jobs, while 6 percent noted that they are not happy with their current position.

Fleet manager salaries were on the rise in 2014 with 32 percent of fleet managers earning more than $100,000 — up from 21 percent in 2012 and 17 percent in 2008. Additionally, 10 percent of fleet managers earned between $70,001 and $75,000 per year.

Fleet managers who manage between three and five staff members reported earning the highest median salary in 2014 of $92,500, down from $95,000 in 2012.

Fleet managers who have earned a post-graduate degree reported the highest median salary in 2014 at $105,500, up slightly from the median of $105,000 in 2012.

Fleet managers with more than 20 years of experience reported the highest median salary in 2014 of $97,500.

44 percent of fleet managers continue to be between the ages of 51 and 60 years old, up from 43 percent in 2012. 

22 percent of fleet managers receive a company car with their position, down from 25 percent in 2012.

The average salary for female and male fleet managers edged closer together in 2014 with a gap of $4,000.

Fleet managers on the West Coast increased their median salary to $90,000 in 2014, up from $87,500 in 2012. Those in New England reported the highest annual median salary of $90,000.
