Volvo Cars of North America Teams with VPSI to Demonstrate Alternative-Fuel Vehicle to Michigan Fleets
Volvo Cars of North America is teaming up with an internationally recognized commuter assistance program to deliver the message that alternative fuel vehicles mesh well with commuter trip-reduction programs. Volvo is loaning a bi-fuel gasoline/compressed natural gas S70 sedan to VPSI Commuter Vanpools, a Troy, MI-based organization that specializes in developing employee trip-reduction programs for employers throughout North America and Europe. VPSI will use the Volvo at business sites throughout the Detroit area to showcase its commuter-assistance efforts and demonstrate alternative-fuel technologies that can be incorporated into company fleets. The car was delivered to VPSI at the 10th annual conference of the Society of Environmental Journalists taking place now at Michigan State University in Lansing, MI. VPSI Inc. is a private, for-profit company providing professionally managed transportation demand management services to public and private customers. The company's primary business is providing and operating commuter vanpool programs. VPSI has 25 offices in the United States, including some of the nation's most congested cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, New York and others. It also has an office in the United Kingdom and four offices in The Netherlands. Volvo's bi-fuel S70 sedan and V70 wagon, which run on either clean-burning compressed natural gas or unleaded gasoline, have been undergoing fleet testing in the U.S. for the past several years. Although not currently available as alternative-fuel vehicles in the U.S. market, they are on sale to fleets in Europe and elsewhere.
