Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. will offer its last Beetle as a more limited-run 2019 model called the Beetle Final Edition, and will cease production of the vehicle in July at its assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico.
The original Beetle, launched in 1938 in Nazi Germany, was also produced at the factory where the final 2003 model, known as the Última Edición, was produced.
The 2019 Beetle Final Edition will be available in two models, including the SE and SEL, in coupe and convertible body styles.
"The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle's many devoted fans," said Hinrich Woebcken, Volkswagen's president and chief executive. "As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S., and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it."
The 2019 Beetle models will be powered by a 2.0-liter TSI engine that makes 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque that delivers power via a six-speed automatic transmission to a front-wheel drivetrain.
Pricing for the 2019 Beetle Final Edition coupe starts at $23,940 for SE models and $26,890 for SEL models. Beetle Convertible Final Edition pricing starts at $28,190 for SE models and $30,890 for SEL models. Pricing includes a $895 delivery charge.
