Toyota is investing $100 million into its Princeton, Ind., operation so it can boost production of the Highlander mid-size SUV by summer of 2016, the automaker has announced.

The capital infusion will create 300 jobs at a manufacturing operation that's divided into the East Plant and the West Plant. The Highlander is now built at the West Plant alongside the Sequoia full-size SUV. The new jobs would be added to the East Plant where Toyota builds the Sienna minivan.

For the seven months ending in July, Toyota sold about 90,000 Highlanders, which represented a 16 percent increase from the same period in 2013. Toyota plans to produce an additional 30,000 Highlanders annually.
