Tesla is expecting to classify its Cybertruck as a Class 2b to 3 medium-duty truck, according to a letter sent by Tesla to the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The automaker predicts the vehicle to have a towing capacity of 7,500 to over 14,000 lbs.

In the letter, Tesla also urged CARB to strenghten its proposed Advanced Clean Truck rules. Tesla recommended manufacturer sales requirements for Class 2b to 3 pickups begin in 2024 instead of 2027. The company also proposed manufacturer sales requirement percentages be altered so that approximately 20% of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on the road are zero-emission by 2030, rather than the 4-5% likely with the percentages currently proposed.

"We urge CARB to set more ambitious zero-emission vehicle sales percentages right from the start of the regulation given the urgency of California’s emissions reductions requirements and the fact that the truck industry can move more quickly," the letter reads.
