The three largest supermarket chains in Southern California have agreed to settle a two year-old lawsuit accusing them of violating Proposition 65, California’s anti-toxins law. Ralphs, Albertsons/Lucky and Safeway/Vons agreed to purchase alternative fuel trucks and send warnings to nearby communities notifying them of the cancer threat caused by diesel truck exhaust. The environmental groups who jointly filed the lawsuit warned other companies that they are compiling lists of distribution centers in other industries that pose similar cancer risks. Proposition 65 requires California companies to notify people who are exposed to cancer-causing pollution. Under the settlement, while the majority of the trucks will remain diesel, significant numbers of natural gas and duel-fuel trucks must be purchased.
