The employees at Ford-owned e-scooter company Spin voted to unionize in December, becoming the first in the nation to form a union.
According to the SF Examiner, the vote to unionize wouldn't have happened without the passing of AB5, which overhauled the status of independent contractors in California. The bill was aimed at insuring ride-hailing drivers are treated as employees and not independent contractors, however the Teamsters union has said the bill has created the opportunity for unionization across other industries.
Before AB5, e-scooter companies relied heavily on independent contractors. Now that they have to hire full-time employees, they are able to form a union.
