Senators Bob Smith (R-NH) and Jim Inhofe (R-OK), ranking members of the Environment and Public Works Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, respectively, announced the week of March 11, 2002 they will offer an amendment to phase out the tax subsidy for ethanol-blended motor fuel as ethanol’s share of the nationwide fuel market increases. A provision of the energy policy legislation currently pending in the Senate would mandate a three-fold increase in ethanol fuel sales over the next 10 years.
