Penske Logistics Installing VORAD System Fleetwide
Following a pilot program, Penske Logistics has decided to install the Eaton VORAD EVT-300 Collision Warning System in its fleet vehicles. The VORAD system lets truck drivers know when they are about to encounter a potentially dangerous situation. A high-frequency radar system sends out signals from the side and front end of the vehicle, monitoring cars and trucks in the blind spot area on the right side, as well as up to 20 vehicles ahead of the truck. When a possibly dangerous situation is detected, a display unit on the dashboard emits a series of audible and visual alerts, warning the truck driver and providing enough time for the trucker to react before an accident happens. In the 12-month-long pilot test, there was a fall of 81 percent in the costs due to accidents that could be prevented by the VORAD system. In addition, there was a fall of 44 percent in costs for all financial losses due to a legal liability for accident-related injuries and damage to other vehicles.
