INDIANA, Pa. --- During a speech before the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell last week argued for turning coal waste into alternative fuels, Pittsburgh Live reported. Gov. Rendell advocated funding development of coal gasification plants and other technologies by diverting $2.6 billion from funds that the Energy Policy Act has earmarked for oil and gas production incentives. The governor told chamber members that the U.S. could build 50 plants for transforming coal waste into diesel fuel, synthetic natural gas or electricity. He also said he thought 10 of those 50 plants should be in Pennsylvania because of the state’s accumulation of coal waste, Pittsburgh Live reported.
