Nissan will begin offering free public charging to new LEAF customers in the Los Angeles area next month, including access to fast chargers that can restore a battery pack from zero to 80 percent in under a half hour.
Los Angeles will be the 11th market the “No Charge to Charge” program is offered when it begins on Aug. 15. Customers who got their LEAF on or after July 1 will receive the benefit.
"Los Angeles has long been one of the world’s top markets for electric car sales," Brendan Jones, director of Nissan Electric Vehicle Sales and Infrastructure, said in a news release. "Adding free access to public fast charging in the LA market gives us a competitive edge over other vehicles, regardless of their fuel source."
LEAF owners and lessees in Dallas-Fort Worth; Houston; Nashville; Phoenix; Portland, Oregon; San Diego; San Francisco; Sacramento; Seattle; and Washington, D.C., already enjoy the program, which gives them two years of no-charge access to hundreds of stations.
Nissan offers the benefit through its new “EZ-Charge” card, which provides access to charging stations operated by ChargePoint, Blink, CarCharging, AeroVironment and NRG eVgo. Nissan notes that not all stations that accept the card are part of the free public charging program.
The automaker has plans to offer the program in another 14 markets by the end of 2015.
