One hundred New York City commuters who win a lottery will be able to lease, for $199 a month, a small two-seat car completely powered by electricity, drive to and from eight train stations, where they can plug in for free, or go anywhere else they please, according to state officials, Reuters reported. The pilot program, announced on Oct.17 by the New York Power Authority, the Long Island Power Authority, and Ford Motor Co.’s green car division, called TH!NK, will start rolling in November, ahead of the official launch of City EV cars next summer. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority of the state of New York, which owns and runs com-muter trains for Long Island and the city’s northern suburbs, also is part of the program. Four train stations on Long Island and four train stations in the suburbs just north of New York City will have the free parking spots and recharging plugs for the electric cars. Ford has yet to decide on a price for the City cars when they hit the market next summer, but the car company believes the new cars will be so popular that a lottery will be needed for the pilot program, which includes a $21 discount on electric car drivers’ monthly train fares. The New York City car program is similar to the one in California that stretches from San Fran-cisco to San Diego in five test markets, Jonathan Richards, an international marketing manager for Ford’s California-based TH!NK, told Reuters after the New York City pilot program was announced at a news conference at Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan.
