PONTIAC, MI — Guidepoint announced on March 15 that it has begun shipping a new stolen vehicle recovery and fleet management system that operates on the nationwide Cingular Wireless GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in the U.S., internationally via Cingular roaming agreements with GSM-based carriers in individual countries, and on the Telefonica and TelCel networks in Mexico. The Pontiac-based telematics supplier said the initial GSM units are being installed throughout Mexico on cars, light trucks, heavy trucks, and construction equipment by the Company's Mexican affiliate, GBR Technologies. The Guidepoint units will operate in Mexico on the GSM-based networks of Telefonica and TelCel. Guidepoint expects to begin rolling out new GSM units in North America over the next six months. The new units will operate on the Cingular U.S. network and can be tracked if taken to Mexico via roaming agreements Cingular has with Telefonica and TelCel. Guidepoint said the new GSM system was developed over the past year in conjunction with Cingular Wireless, which operates the largest digital voice and data network in the U.S., and San-Jose, Calif.-based telematics developer GenX Mobile. In addition to reliable coverage throughout North and Central America, the new system will allow Guidepoint to expand the range of value-added applications it can offer users. GSM is used by more than 1 billion people in 200-plus countries around the world. Through roaming alliances with other GSM-based providers around the world, Cingular says it provides the largest global presence of any U.S. wireless carrier, with coverage in more than 75 countries for data and more than 170 countries for voice.
