Hyundai Motor Co. said it may build assembly plants in North America if the company reaches its target of doubling sales in the world’s top two markets by 2005. Hyundai aims to sell 500,000 vehicles a year in each of the markets within five years. The Seoul-based company sold 220,000 vehicles in North America and 250,000 in Europe last year.
In June, Hyundai agreed with DaimlerChrysler AG to form an alliance to make compact vehicles. The company expects U.S. sales to increase 35 percent this year, and plans to grow next year with a new sport/utility vehicle and midsize sedan.
