General Motors is shelving plans to build a fuel-cell-powered version of its hybrid-electric “Precept” concept car, and will instead focus on converting existing vehicles to fuel cells, reports the Detroit News. GM had said in January it would have a fuel-cell Precept on the road by late 2000, but now intends to have a converted Chevrolet S-10 pickup running on a fuel cell by 2002. GM plans to offer large numbers of fuel-cell vehicles by 2010. It is developing a hydrogen-storage system that uses hydrides, but says it’s at least two years away. GM is now testing a tiny European minivan that travels 250 miles on 16 gallons of liquefied hydrogen. It is also working on onboard systems that would convert gasoline into hydrogen, as there are virtually no hydrogen-refueling stations now.
