GM CEO-designate Richard Wagoner said that he doesn’t agree with Ford Motor Co. that sport utility vehicles are dangerous and unduly harmful to the environment. He said that over the past several years great strides have been made in improving the safety record and fuel economy of SUVs. At its annual meeting May 10, Ford released its first corporate citizenship report in which it said it recognized that SUVs are inherently more dangerous than passenger cars and are harmful to the environment by burning more fuel. But in a subsequent interview Chairman William Clay Ford Jr., who is a strong environmental advocate, said that the automaker never contemplated discontinuing the sale of SUVs. Wagoner also confirmed recent analyst reports that the bidding process for South Korean automaker Daewoo Motor Co. is moving slower than expected. He said he expects it will be at least September — if not well into the fourth quarter — before parent company Daewoo Group decides which of the bidders gets control of the carmaker.
