Ford Recalling Multiple 2013 Models, Including Police Interceptors
In the biggest recall of the three, Ford is calling back 2013 model-year Ford Explorer, Taurus, Flex, Fusion, and Police Interceptor vehicles as well as Lincoln MKS, MKT, and MKZ vehicles.
Ford Motor Co. is issuing three separate recalls, the largest of which affects approximately 390,000 vehicles in the U.S.
In the biggest recall of the three, Ford is calling back 2013 model-year Ford Explorer, Taurus, Flex, Fusion, and Police Interceptor vehicles as well as Lincoln MKS, MKT, and MKZ vehicles. Ford decided to issue the recall after receiving complaints about fuel tank leaks, which pose a fire risk.
Specific to the Ford Police Interceptor vehicles, Ford is recalling 20,000 of them, including 8,384 Police Interceptor sedans and 11,517 Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. This recall affects sedans built between Aug. 31, 2011 and Jan. 10, 2013, and Utility models built between Aug. 25, 2011 and Dec. 21, 2012.
"If they smell an odor of fuel or notice a fuel leak, call the dealer immediately," said Kelli Felker, Ford's safety spokesperson. "The most important thing is we are not aware of any fires, accidents or injuries as a result of this condition."
The other two recalls involve 100 2013 model-year Lincoln MKZ midsize sedans in the U.S. and Canada and 20 2013 model-year Fusion midsize sedans in the U.S., respectively.
The Lincoln MKZ recall involves vehicles equipped with engine block heaters. The insulation on the electrical cord for the heaters has the potential to crack in extreme, freezing temperatures. This condition increases the risk of corrosion, electrical shock, and fire.
The Fusion recall is linked to a potential flaw in the steering gears, which could result in a loss of steering control.
Ford will make the repairs free of charge.
