Ford has sold the 7-millionth Explorer mid-size SUV as it gets ready to introduce a redesigned version that will enter the vehicle's sixth generation at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Ford reached the sales milestone since introducing the vehicle for the 1991 model year. The popular SUV is now sold in 100 global markets. Ford will unveil the 2016 Explorer on Nov. 19. The vehicle will go on sale during the summer of 2015 in its 25th year of production.
The Explorer has been a fleet favorite due to its utility and ruggedness. In 2013, it was the top mid-size SUV registered by commercial, government, and rental fleets with 51,314 units. The fleet segments added 12,414, 18,028, and 20,872 respectively. Ford offers a law enforcement version called the Police Interceptor Utility.
