General Motors will end production of its Chevrolet Sonic subcompact car and Ford Motor Co. plans to discontinue its Fiesta subcompact car and Taurus midsize sedan, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
The move comes amid a broader push by Detroit automakers to boost sport-utility vehicles in their lineups to meet public demand. Passenger cars, especially smaller ones, have fallen out of favor in recent years.
General Motors plans to cease production of the Sonic as early as this year, reported the Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter. General Motors is also considering phasing out the Chevrolet Impala.
Ford hasn't confirmed the move, and a General Motors spokesperson couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
"As we have said, by 2020 Ford trucks and utility vehicles — including their electrified versions — are going to be almost 90 percent of our volume," said Jiyan Cadiz, a Ford spokesman. "Passenger cars, including Fiesta and Taurus, remain an important part of our lineup."
